What in the Worlds? Worldbuilding Workshop (April 16)

Feeling a little stuck in this world? Dreaming about other possibilities? Come play with Submersive Productions in What in the Worlds: an online workshop for collaborative and creative ideation open to all!

NOTE: the previously announced Sunday April 17 workshop will be rescheduled to a later date. The Saturday April 16 workshop will still take place as planned; details below.

Submersive Productions is developing a show called The Boundary, an interactive piece which explores the themes of memory, grief, loss and rituals surrounding death. As part of the development of this piece, we are hosting what we call “research sessions” – interactive workshops wherein we lead people through various exercises and start conversations which may be woven into the framework of the show.

We will be facilitating a virtual research session related to this show on Saturday April 16 from 1:00 – 2:30 EST. RSVP here: https://forms.gle/rLc3CaJv7Kekabsa8

If you’d like a gentle space to flex your creative muscles, learn some new tools for idea generation, or just generally want to come hang and be morbid with us — you’ve come to the right place! No previous experience with writing, theater or visual arts necessary – just come in with an open mind and a reliable Internet connection (see requirements below).

How to Attend:

Please reserve your spot in either or both workshops by completing the RSVP form, and sending a minimum $1 payment to Submersive Productions:

If you feel motivated to send more than $1, that is also welcome! 100% of funds raised from this workshop will go towards covering costs of producing “The Boundary.”

Technical Requirements:

  • a dedicated Internet connection
  • joining via laptop/desktop computer (rather than mobile) is highly recommended, given the nature of the tools and the activities we are doing (if you do not have access to a computer but still would like to participate, please contact the facilitator beforehand to test things out)
  • For this workshop, we will be using Miro, an online digital collaborative tool. Although it is a new tool for many people, we find it to be very user-friendly and full of lots of useful features. Feel free to try it out here: https://miro.com/app/board/uXjVO-BlA58=/?moveToWidget=3458764522822071352&cot=14

Note: as mentioned above, materials generated during these workshops may be incorporated into the development of a theatrical show. If you have questions about how these materials may be used, please do not hesitate to ask.

About the workshop:

Participants will create word clouds based on images, and then create mood boards (essentially a digital collage, emphasizing color, emotion, textures and sound) based on those images. If you’ve never made a mood board before, no worries — I’ll walk you through the process! At the end of the session, we’ll share our mood boards with the larger group. These mood boards will serve as a focal point for the second part of this workshop (June TBD).

About the facilitator:

Kim Le (she/her) is a core creator with Submersive Productions. She is a multidisciplinary theatre artist with a background in improv comedy and creative non-fiction, and a totally healthy interest in the macabre. In addition to performance art, she enjoys making food sculptures and having one-sided conversations with her cat, Oliver. You can find more information about her work at kimblery.com.

About “The Boundary”:

This work aims to explore the concept of death and people’s relationships to this ultimately universal event. The piece will be largely digital in format, with elements of digital puppetry and synchronous / asynchronous performance. We are currently in the worldbuilding development phase of this project.
